Not receiving a diagnosis of ADHD until adulthood can be both liberating and infuriating. The understanding of ADHD continues to expand and improve in medical and mental health settings. This is especially true for women because we know more about the varied ways in which cultural and social expectations impact perceived symptoms in children. Additionally, recognizing the hormonal impact of puberty, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause has been grossly overlooked until the past decade.
