Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is such a widely misunderstood diagnosis. Sure, we all hear about excessive hand washing and being a “germaphobe.” People frequently confuse perfectionist or “type A” behavior as OCD as well, but preferences and habits are not OCD. This diagnosis is far more complicated, often more debilitating, and confusing than most people realize. It is unfortunately not uncommon for someone to spend over a decade in therapy before OCD symptoms are recognized for what they are. And even more upsetting, good intentions by both professionals and loved ones often unintentionally make symptoms worse.
